John Edwards visits Cleveland, Ohio. The city has suffered a wave of home foreclosures in recent months as a result of a combination of job losses, predatory lenders and falling home prices. Predatory lenders and mortgage brokers have targeted the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, like many other working-class and predominantly African-American neighborhoods across the country.
The Democrats caused this entire thing, and people STILL are out of touch with reality.

They chose to sign the dotted line for an adjustable rate mortgage without reading the agreement and without hearing the banker explaining the details of their mortgage and then they got all surprised when their payments doubled. Each excuse they came up with was lamer than the previous one. They did this to themselves!

The newly elected President Barack Obama could enact(once he takes office)to federally mandate long term loan modification’s (interest) on behalf of all Americans with ARM Negative (sub-prime/ deferred interest) mortgage loans (the main reason for foreclosures) at a low interest rate (fixed by the Federal Reserve Bank) for 40 & 50 year’s, depending on income. Leaving it up to the bank’s to do this is akin to putting the fox in the hen house to protect them.
Excuse me—if you live in a city where people are getting laid off from their jobs right and left—which is why a lot of people end up losing their homes–hell, I live in Michigan, where even people with a degree are having to leave the state because their are no jobs in their fields. Doing all that is NO guarantee that you won’t get laid off or spent the next 6 months pounding the pavement for another job paying far less than your old one. Plus Michigan has the highest unemployment rate now.
So what if they don’t own the home? They are still LIVING there and paying rent. I know of a woman who was renting a house here in Detroit—her landford lost the house, it got foreclosed on,it got bought by a foreign company, but she was never informed, and continued to pay rent until the morning she called and told she and kids had literally 4 hours to get out of the house. She never even got an eviction notice, which by law she should have. People who rent aren’t worth less than homeowners.

I am sorry, but with all thr FREE financial information available on the net, there is no excuse for not researching loans, rates and pitfalls before you sign the dotted line. Yes, there are bad people out there trying to steal from you, some with guns, some with ink pens, always has been and always will be, it is up to the individual to educate themselves.
Well, why not go to the core of the problem ? Financially uneducated consumers ? You wouldn’t go for the loans these people did, nor would I. Why do we know better and they don’t ? Maybe they surf right past CNBC or Wall Street Week on their way to Wrestle Mania or Survivor ?

If these people are so broke, why not go to the Legal Aid Society for some pro bono legal advice ? DUH !
“These people” may still believe that lenders are honest, which they should be, and “these people” are seeking second mortgages, which means they are probably in dire financial straights to begin with and lawyers are a luxury when you are broke. Duh.
Bottom line is, most of these people do not earn enough money to be home owners in the forst place. It is an earned privilage, not a “right” to buy a home. They will lose nothing, as most were no down payments and had bad credit to begin with, big deal.
Why didn’t these people use a real estate lawyer before signing the papers they didn’t understand ? I guess it is always someone “elses” fault when you screw up these days.

I saw a portion of this on CSPAN, but I couldn’t hear Sen. Edwards very well at all. I would like to see more video of this. I am so glad that Sen. Edwards is bringing attention to poverty and how these people are being taken adavantage of.
